Post Migori Debrief June 25, 2022
Alright, I just got back from Migori and my head has been cranking away for the last 17 hours of riding the bus.
First, this is what I took in.
Mama brandy is struggling to make ends meet. She seems to be the primary provider for the entire family.
Mama has some farm land but no longer has cows or chickens.
She also has land in Kisumu.
The community is growing in infrastructure.
Brandy has a skill in masonry.
Velma is a hard worker.
A new family is about to move in.
People are leaving the Jobando church due to corruption.
When I left last time, there was a lot of negativity and repercussions.
There are 4 colleges in Migori.
Mildren owns a business and needs capital to grow it.
Mama loves loves loves babies and their family has a surplus of love and compassion.
They lack discipline.
Jo Mixon consulting (just helped Alice create a business. However, is it sustainable in Kenya.
Brandi is looking to move back to Mombasa to do masonry.
Now this is what I’m thinking. I hoped before that a small tech school could be developed. I also dreamed of an orphanage and a home built of stone. But I am concerned with sustainability and effectiveness.
I’m reading an article about foreign aid. It says, “donors can either redesign foreign aid contracts to improve the policies pursued by recipients; or switch to ex post conditionality or selectivity, with a focus on the recipient governments ownership of the aid-funded activities, and, since aid is fungible, give aid for budget support. Donors are increasingly moving towards the second option, while aid recipients are wary about this shift in foreign aid policy. (e.g. Gunning, 2001)
In ex-post conditionality, the country receiving aid agrees to conditions set by the donor or lender that they will carry out after they receive the aid. Later follow-ups determine whether they might receive more aid.
High level of donations increase reliance on foreign aid.
As Jo Mixon Consulting, I could offer a grant to individuals who prove that they have what it takes to make it in business. I can come along side them in creating a business plan.
Like Alice.
But I need to have everything written out. And a group of people deciding.
